Ålesund is internationally known for its characteristic Art Nouveau architecture with towers, spires and ornamental facades. This architectural style in the city centre is the result of a catastrophic fire in 1904 in which the entire city centre burned down. The architects which helped to rebuild the city were young, Norwegian and inspired by the contemporary style, as well as by national and national romantic impulses. The city therefore holds a unique spot in Norwegian architectural history and is part of a European network for Art Nouveau together with Glasgow, Nancy, Vienna, Barcelona, Brussels and Riga.
